Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor D. M. Volochnyuk

The department was established in 1958 by Professor P. S. Pelkis, who headed it until 1980. Since 2011, the department has been led by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor D. M. Volochnyuk. The department employs 2 doctors of science, 11 PhD and a senior engineer.

The main scientific focus of the department is molecular design and the synthesis of compounds for the needs of medicinal and agrochemistry. The department works on lead-oriented synthesis and strategies for diversity-oriented conformational constraint. Additionally, research is conducted on developing methods for synthesizing analogs of natural and biologically active substances containing pharmacophore groups with phosphorus and fluorine atoms.

Major Scientific and Practical Achievements of the Department

The department's staff has developed new medicinal drugs (Ademol, Amben, Mebiphen, Nicorandil, Tomerzol, Yakton), which were created as part of joint projects with institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Biochemistry; Food Biotechnology and Genomics; Cell Biology and Genetic Engineering) and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (Pharmacology and Toxicology; Experimental and Applied Oncology and Radiology). The department actively participates in various projects with domestic and international partners aimed at discovering new compounds with specific biological properties: "Synthesis of Combinatorial Libraries and Functional Materials" (PJSC "Macrohim"), "Development and Synthesis of New Polyfunctional Building Blocks for Medicinal Chemistry" (BCH Research, United Kingdom), Targeted comprehensive program of fundamental research by the NAS of Ukraine: "Fundamental Problems in the Creation of New Substances and Materials for Chemical Production" (project: "Design and Synthesis of Next-Generation Nitrogen-Containing Bisphosphonates, Investigation of Their Synergy with Vitamin D3 in Treating Bone Tissue Disorders"), State Targeted Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Advanced Technologies for the Creation of Domestic Medicinal Products to Support Human Health and Meet Veterinary Medicine Needs for 2011–2015, "Development of New Drugs to Combat Human Enterobacterial Infections Based on Heterocyclic Compounds."
